Technical Description

An exceptional engraved opaque twist cordial glass dating to c1760. It has a small round funnel bowl engraved with fruiting vine. Sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of a 21-ply spiral band outside a pair of spiral tapes. Large helmet foot.

True cordials from the 18th century are very popular...not for the volume of fluid that they hold...just simply because of how elegant they are.

Date & Origin

England, c1760. Period of George II.

Condition

Excellent, age-related wear as shown, no chips cracks or restoration.

Height: 17.7cm

Rim diameter: 4.2cm

Foot diameter: 7.8cm.

Historical Context

This glass was made approx 10 years prior to James Cook’s landing at Botany Bay in Australia and approx 15 years after the Jacobite defeat at Culloden in Scotland.
