Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Scottish painted bookcase stands 255 cm high, 159 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. The Victorian piece consists of a tall upper section with a moulded cornice above three doors fitted with gold-tone brass lattice grilles, revealing enclosed timber shelving within. The lower section comprises three solid panelled cupboard doors with visible keyhole escutcheons, all finished in a dark, distressed black paint that shows subtle wear along the edges and mouldings. Positioned in a gentleman's library or a substantial living space, the bookcase provides both display capacity and concealed storage. The upper compartment accommodates books or decorative objects behind its lattice inserts, while the base stores bulkier items out of sight. The interior shelving can be removed to convert the lower or upper section for media equipment storage.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century Scottish painted bookcases typically feature painted softwood or hardwood construction with glazed or metal lattice upper doors over an enclosed panelled cupboard base.

These cabinets were constructed using local timbers such as pine or oak, finished in dark lead-based or milk paints, and fitted with hand-worked brass lattice grilles or glass panes.

Authentic original finishes demonstrate localized wear near handles and keyholes, subtle timber shrinkage around panel joints, and historical paint layering rather than uniform modern spray application.

Position the piece as a central focal point, arranging light-coloured ceramics, bound volumes, and sculptural objects on internal shelves to create visual contrast.

Remove dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid applying damp cloths or chemical sprays that dissolve original paint layers, and clean brass grilles using a dry soft bristle brush.
