Size: 5ft 0in x 2ft 9in (153 x 83cm).

Antique Tekke Turkmen chuval with nine large 'Salor' turreted guls.

Circa 1880.

Chuval are storage bags used by the Turkmen nomads for the storage of personal items inside the yurt and also for the transport of goods on the backs of camels or horses. They were usually woven in pairs.

A good chuval complete with its original ivory plain weave back, the face is very well drawn with nine 'Salor' guls and Tekke chuval guls as secondary guls. The extensive use of cochineal dye gives the superb ground colour. The elem is of the small flowering shrub design.

Excellent condition with slight even wear, there are a few spots of slightly heavier wear; the back has some staining / discolouration due to tribal use.

A chuval is a large woven bag traditionally crafted by nomadic Turkmen tribes in Central Asia to store clothing, bedding, and household goods inside yurts during migrations.

Tekke chuvals were hand-knotted using locally sourced wool on a wool foundation, dyed with natural plant extracts to produce rich crimson and madder red tones, and finished with a flatweave back.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature soft natural dyes, fine hand-spun wool, distinct tribal octagonal motifs called guls, tight knotting density, and often retain their original woven backing and lower elem skirt panel.

An antique chuval can be mounted as a textured wall hanging, filled for use as a floor cushion, or integrated into modern or period settings as a decorative accent textile.
