Antique Tekke Turkmen Torba of Small Size and Scarce Design, Circa 1880.

19th century
Description

Size: 2ft 7in x 10in (78 x 26cm) face size excluding tassels.

Antique Tekke Turkmen torba of fine weave and small size, with a scarce design to the central panel. Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.

Circa 1880 or earlier.

The torba is in very good condition with even wear and medium pile, the original plain back has been removed at some point in the torba's history. Note the original long tassels in alternating colours. The torba still retains a 'smoked' feel, from the wood and peat fires that burnt within the Yurt.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A torba is a small woven bag face produced by nomadic Turkmen tribes, traditionally used to store personal items inside a yurt or transport goods during migration.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a wool warp and weft, featuring natural dyes such as madder for rich red tones and indigo for deep blues.

Authentic pieces exhibit asymmetrical hand-knotted structure, dark muted red palettes from natural dyes, geometric tribal guls, and typical age wear such as softened selvages.

A small torba works well mounted as framed textile wall art, displayed on a side table top, or layered as a decorative accent over neutral upholstery.

Vacuum gently using low suction without a rotating brush, protect from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and consult a specialist textile conservator for deep cleaning.
