Description

A thumper of chest with an interesting provenance that could make an excellent country house logbox. All four baize-lined trays are present, and they, and the interior are lined with marbled-paper.

Lt. Colonel Thomas Ogilvy of Islabank, now Ruthven House, was married to Lady Henrietta Ogilvy, daughter of Thomas William Fermor, 4th Earl of Pomfret of Easton Neston.

I don't have the details of Lt. Colonel Ogilvy's service record, but presume a stint in British India is likely. Whether this chest was taken on campaign is not clear, and from memory there is specific mention of silver chests in Nicholas Brawer's 'British Campaign Furniture- Elegance Under Canvas 1740-1914', but recall it could typically take up to nine elephants to move and officer's kit, such was the luxury and style in which they travelled!

Condition: Structurally sound and even empty it's heavy. Many of the mounts are rusted, there is a split on the top and some worm damage to the front edge, all visible from the images.
