Antique Georgian Flat Cut Garnet Seed Pearl Gold Lace Pin Brooch

18th century
Description

This stunning Antique flat cut Garnet and Pearl mourning pin dates to the early 1800's and is set in 9ct Gold.

The beautiful brooch features Natural Flat Cut Foil Back Garnets which were very popular during the Georgian era and are highly collectable today.

Inside the Garnet halo, there is a second halo of original natural seed Pearls surrounding a glass casing containing fine plaited hair. Hair was often used in jewellery during the Georgian and Victorian pieces as a sign of remembering a loved one.

The Garnets have a lovely play of colour with purples flashing through, and the Natural creamy Pearls complement them beautifully. Garnet is the birthstone for January and the stone that celebrates the 2nd anniversary of marriage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian garnet jewellery refers to pieces crafted during the reigns of King George I through King George IV (17141830), characterised by hand-cut flat garnets often set over coloured foil to enhance light reflection.

Georgian garnets were typically flat-cut and mounted in closed-back settings with foil backing, frequently framed by gold or gilded mounts alongside seed pearls or glass-covered hairwork panels.

Authentic pieces feature closed-back gold or silver mounts, hand-cut gemstones with slight irregularities, crimped rub-over settings, and original simple C-clasp pin fittings without modern safety catches.

An antique brooch can be pinned to a modern tailored blazer lapel, fastened at the collar of a buttoned shirt, or attached to a silk scarf as a focal point.

Foil-backed jewellery must be protected from contact with water and moisture to prevent oxidisation of the foil, and should be cleaned using only a dry, soft polishing cloth.
