Seventeenth-century English furniture is characterised by heavy construction, solid timber framing, and often features hand-carved geometric decorations or applied mouldings. Pieces from this period reflect the transition from utilitarian joinery to more decorative cabinet-making techniques.

Early chests were constructed predominantly from solid English oak, frequently joined using traditional mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. Drawers from this era typically feature hand-cut dovetails, tongue-and-groove bottoms, and applied geometric moulding details.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate tool marks, hand-split or hand-sawn timber boards, and natural oxidisation and wear consistent with age. Examination of the drawer construction, timber shrinkage, and original iron or brass hardware also helps verify authenticity.

Pairing heavy historic timber with minimalist modern surroundings creates a striking visual contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the piece. Placing it against a neutral wall allows the rich tones and geometric textures of the wood to serve as a focal point.

Antique oak should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and splitting. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the finish and nourish the timber.
