A dough bin, also known as a dough trough or kneading trough, was a traditional piece of country vernacular furniture used in 18th and 19th-century households for mixing, kneading, and proving bread dough. The enclosed wooden trough protected the dough from draughts while providing an elevated work surface.

Traditional dough bins were constructed from durable native hardwoods such as elm, oak, or pine. They feature tapered side panels joined with dovetail or pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, frequently set atop a wooden stand with sturdy stretchers.

Authentic 18th-century examples display hand-planed timber surfaces, pegged joinery, and natural shrinkage or warping consistent with historical age. Look for wide-grain elm boards, hand-carved support legs, and signs of historical wear inside the trough from repeated kitchen use.

In modern interior schemes, a dough bin functions as an occasional console table, hallway focal point, or storage vessel for textiles and blankets. Position it along a narrow wall or behind a seating area to add rich timber texture to rustic or contemporary spaces.

Preserve the surface of antique elm by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement.
