Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A tantalus is a locking drink cabinet designed to display spirit decanters while preventing unauthorised access to the contents. They gained immense popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods as households increasingly entertained guests at home.

Traditional tantalus frames are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, accented with plated metal locking mechanisms, carrying handles, and corner mounts. The accompanying decanters are usually made from heavy cut crystal with matching stoppers and silver-plated bottle labels.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut crystal decanters with star-cut bases, heavy solid wood construction with dovetail joints or sturdy metal fittings, and working functional locks complete with period keys. Maker marks on the silver labels or hardware can also help verify the manufacturing era.

An antique tantalus works well as a focal point on a sideboard, home bar, or within a study to add historical character and texture. Pairing it with complementary glassware or polished metal accessories helps integrate the traditional piece into a modern decorative scheme.

Maintain the polished wood finish using a quality microcrystalline wax, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Clean the crystal decanters gently with warm soapy water and a bottle brush, ensuring stoppers are stored slightly ajar to prevent moisture trapping.
