Description

Ikat is a technique of tie-dying which was developed in Uzbekistan to create a wonderful array of textiles. One sees ikat work primarily on costume and clothing, but it was also used on furnishing items. One of the most attractive aspects of this art form is the daring colour combinations employed by the dyers and weavers . Dating to around 1880, this lovely panel is made up of five colours and certainly lives up to that. The pale green field is filled with flame-like motifs in magenta red each with with yellow, aubergine and magenta details. A blue appears in the centre of the secondary ornaments. It is a striking composition which would make a graphic contribution to any decorative setting. There are a few splits in the fabric so mounting is recommended. This piece would make a stunning piece of wall art.
