Claret jugs gained immense popularity during the Victorian era as formal dining became a central focus of middle and upper-class households, with designs often reflecting the periods fascination with ornate, nature-inspired motifs.

These pieces typically combine heavy-lead cut crystal or moulded glass bodies with electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver mounts, often featuring intricate cast or chased botanical details.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weight and clarity of the glass, the quality of the hand-chased silver mounts, and checking for period makers marks or electroplate registry stamps on the metal collar or handle.

Such items can be displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving to introduce textural contrast and historical interest to contemporary dining or living spaces.

Wash the glass gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive cleaners on the silver plating to prevent wearing down the metal finish.
