Rare Early 19th Century Wine Glass C1810

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Exhibit Antiques

Technical Description

A fine example of an early 19th century wine glass dating to c1810.

It has a large rare hexagonally moulded conical bowl, the bands of hexagons becoming smaller and tighter as they near the rim. Sits on an angular knop stem with a conical foot and polished pontil.

The origin of the glass is a difficult one, either England or Europe.

On the English argument, the design (or form) of the glass is very English, early 19th. Under UV it displays both blue and some green and compares fairly to other English wines of this form and period.

On the European argument, the moulded decoration is not something you would normally find on an English glass early 19th and would be considered exceptionally rare. You would however find it on earlier 18th century glass from Europe where moulded bowls were both varied and popular. Also the UV test could be consistent with higher lead content glass from the early 19th in Europe.
