Carriage lanterns were originally designed to illuminate the path for horse-drawn vehicles during the 18th and 19th centuries, utilising candles or oil before transitioning to gas and electricity.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from hand-beaten brass, copper, or painted cast iron, featuring soldered metal frames fitted with heavy bevelled glass panels.

Authentic examples often display evidence of hand-craftsmanship such as riveted joints, patinated metal surfaces, hand-blown or heavy cast glass, and original mounting brackets.

They can be converted for modern electrical wiring and mounted beside exterior doorways, within hallways, or utilised as striking architectural statement pieces in a porch or study.

Metal components should be dusted gently with a dry cloth to preserve the natural oxidisation and patina, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip historical surfaces.
