Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating prior to the widespread adoption of chest of drawers, the coffer was a primary storage vessel in 17th and early 18th-century European households. Constructed from solid timber, these sturdy chests were used to store valuable textiles, linens, and personal possessions, often serving a dual purpose as seating.

Period coffers were assembled using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs rather than metal nails. They typically feature a panelled frame constructionincluding arcaded or geometric carved panelswith a hinged lid made from solid oak planks.

Authentic pieces from around 1700 demonstrate hand-hewn oak, original peg construction, and signs of age such as uneven oxidisation and shrinkage along the grain. The presence of carved motifs like arcading, gouged friezes, and original iron hinges or lock plates further confirms the era.

An antique coffer functions exceptionally well in a hallway as an entryway bench, at the foot of a bed for extra bedding storage, or positioned beneath a window. The rich dark oak contrast adds visual weight and warmth to both contemporary minimalist and traditional schemes.

Keep the wood free from direct heat sources and excessive humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing gently along the direction of the grain to preserve the original patina.
