FAQs

Victorian pierced silver baskets were typically used on formal dining tables during the 19th century to serve sweets, fruits, or sugar cubes. The elaborate pierced metalwork reflects the eras taste for ornate and highly decorative tableware.

These pieces were commonly constructed using sterling silver, silver-plated metal alloys, or white metal frames, frequently paired with blown glass inserts in colours such as cobalt blue or cranberry.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining manufacturer hallmarks, maker marks, and the quality of the piercing work, which was often hand-cut or intricately pierced using a jewelers saw rather than modern stamping techniques.

This object can be placed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or mantelpiece as a decorative accent. The contrasting metal and coloured glass insert provide visual texture and catch the light effectively in contemporary spaces.

To preserve the finish, clean the metal gently using a specialized silver cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that can wear away thin silver plating. The glass liner can be removed and washed separately in warm soapy water.
