18th Century Old Sheffield Plated Goblet

Description

This wine goblet is made of Old Sheffield Plate and has its original gilded interior. The piece bears no makers marks but dates to the 18th Century. Marked with a family crest which I believe to be Irish. With a visible internal seam and tinned to the base.

In overall good condition with quite a bit of copper bleed to the raised edges and flecked to the body.

Old Sheffield Plate was developed in the mid-eighteenth century following Thomas Boulsovers discovery in 1742 of fusing sterling silver onto copper ingots. This process allowed makers to create luxury silver-appearing wares at a fraction of the cost of solid silver until electroplating superseded it in the 1840s.

These items were manufactured by fusing sheets of sterling silver onto a central copper core. The fused metal block was rolled into thin sheets, which craftsmen then hand-hammered and shaped into stemware, chalices, and hollowware.

Authentic pieces often feature subtle copper exposure or bleeding where the silver surface has worn down through age and polishing. They typically lack modern electroplate hallmarks, displaying instead maker marks, hand-drawn edges, or turned rims to hide copper core seams.

Position the piece on a sideboard top, curated bar cart, or mantelpiece alongside contrasting textures such as dark timber, glassware, or polished marble. It functions well as a standalone decorative accent or within a broader silver collection.
