Exquisite Oblong Silver Vesta Case by Henry Matthews 1921

1900 - 1920
Description

An exquisite solid silver vesta case, unusually oblong in shape and very slightly concave in design. Beautifully engraved with swirling patterns to both the front and the back. The front bears a vacant cartouche in the centre. Hinged on one side the lid opens and closes perfectly and shows a gilted finish to the interior. The case has clear hallmarks visible on the inside lip for the Birmingham Assay Office, with a date mark for 1921 and the Lion Passant indicating sterling silver, along with the silversmith's maker's mark : Henry Matthews. Partial marks are also visible on the lid. There is a good fastening loop to one side.

This vesta is lovely to hold in the hand and is in great condition. (Some very light surface scratches to the surface of the cartouche mentioned for accuracy only). The maker 'Henry Matthews' is renowned for his attention to detail and this is evident.
