Sang de boeuf, meaning oxblood in French, refers to a deep red ceramic glaze achieved through copper oxidation in a high-temperature reduction kiln. The style originated in China during the Ming dynasty and saw widespread refinement throughout the Qing dynasty.

The distinct red and variegated streak effect is created by adding copper oxide to the glaze mixture. During firing, controlling the oxygen supply in the kiln causes the copper to transform, yielding red, purple, blue, and cream streaks.
