Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, decorative artisans combined dark patinated bronze with mercury-gilded bronze, known as ormolu, to create sculptural candlesticks. These items frequently incorporated classical motifs, botanical elements, or naturalistic animal figures like cranes and storks.

Ormolu involves applying a gold-mercury amalgam onto bronze, which is heated to burn off the mercury and leave a durable layer of gold. Patinated bronze sections were treated with chemical solutions to produce deep brown, green, or black tones, offering contrast against the polished gilt areas.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased surface details, threaded assembly rods inside the hollow casting, and heavy visual weight consistent with solid cast metal. The gilding often shows subtle wear on high points rather than uniform contemporary plating.

Figural candlesticks function as focal accessories on a fireplace mantel, sideboard, or console table. Placing them symmetrically frames art prints or mirrors, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design schemes.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel-hair brush to clean recessed relief details. Avoid abrasive liquid polishes, solvents, or water, as these can strip historical patinas and damage delicate gold leaf or ormolu finishes.
