Description

Superb pair of French Spelter figures on turned wooden plinths, each carrying a removable circular mirror to represent the sun/moon.

Perfect for a mantelpiece, side table or any designer location, could also be suitable for a dressing table or even conversion to lamps.

Please note that the figures are Art Noveau period but the mirrors are modern replacements from original mirrors or coloured glass panels.

Great designer look with good patina. Height without mirrors is 45cm with wooden base diameter of 11cm.

Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Art Nouveau figural mirrors feature natural curves, fluid lines, and classical allegorical or feminine forms. Spelter, a zinc-based alloy, was frequently employed during this era to create intricate sculpture-inspired decorative items at an accessible weight and cost.

These mirrors were cast using spelter metal, an alloy of zinc often bronzed or patinated to mimic cast bronze. The cast metal frames house silvered circular glass mirror plates set upon solid weighted bases.

Authentic period pieces display fine details in the drapery and facial features, along with natural surface oxidisation or patina. Spelter items are typically lighter than solid bronze and may show white zinc oxidation inside hollow cast areas.
