FAQs

A coffer bach, translating from Welsh as little chest, is a traditional miniature box produced in Wales during the 17th and 18th centuries, often used as a dowry or wedding gift to store valuables, documents, or small textiles.

These chests are typically constructed from native British oak using traditional joinery methods such as frame-and-panel construction, hand-cut dovetails for internal drawers, and wooden peg fixings, often complemented by brasses.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, timber shrinkage, natural oxidisation, hand-forged or early cast brass hardware, and construction irregularities consistent with 18th-century cabinet making rather than modern machinery.

Such a chest can be positioned on a console table, sideboard, or sturdy desk as a focal point, serving as functional storage for small items while introducing historical texture and warmth to modern spaces.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying and cracking, and apply occasional applications of quality beeswax to nourish the wood and preserve the natural patina.
