FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional storage item that evolved from the simple boarded chest by adding one or more drawers beneath the main compartment. Popular during the 17th and 18th centuries in Britain, it bridged the gap between the blanket chest and the modern chest of drawers.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid native timber, most commonly English oak, utilising traditional joinery such as frame-and-panel construction, hand-cut dovetails for the drawers, and pegged joints to accommodate natural wood movement.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery characteristics, such as hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetails, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, and timber patination consistent with age and regular use.

A period chest provides functional storage and textural contrast in contemporary spaces, working effectively as a hallway focal point, a bedroom linen store, or a living room surface for lamps and decorative objects.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent wood splitting, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish and protect the finish.
