This set of four 1920 French Chateau light fittings consists of gold-coloured gilt metal and clear glass components. The items depict flying cherub figures attached to leaf-form backplates, holding textured, vertically ribbed glass shades with turned metal collars. Each piece includes original wiring passing through the figures and detailed carving on the cherubs' bodies and hair. The fittings measure 30 cm high and 15 cm wide. Buyers typically hang such fixtures in traditional living spaces, hallways, or dining rooms as accent wall lighting. The set requires rewiring prior to installation by a qualified electrician to meet modern safety standards. Each fixture attaches securely to a wall surface via the integrated mounting hardware behind the backplates.

FAQs

Figural light fittings featuring winged cherubs or putti became highly popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, drawing heavily on French Rococo and Baroque artistic movements. These designs integrated classical motifs into practical domestic illumination, bridging fine sculpture with functional decorative arts.

These fixtures are typically constructed from cast brass, bronze, or spelter, often finished with gold gilding or lacquer. The shades are commonly crafted from pressed or hand-blown glass, featuring geometric or botanical surface patterns.

Dust metal surfaces gently using a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth to avoid stripping aged gilding. Glass shades can be detached and washed in lukewarm water with mild soap, ensuring they are fully dry before reassembly.

Gilt metal sconces create visual contrast when mounted against modern matte wall surfaces or dark wood panelling. They function well in hallways, dining areas, or alcoves to provide warm accent lighting and architectural character.

Authentic period fixtures display casting seams, hand-chased details, and natural oxidisation in recessed areas of the metalwork. Older glass shades generally exhibit subtle hand-finishing marks, varying thickness, or minor air bubbles beneath the surface.
