This Victorian Gothic Revival stool dates from 1850 and is formed from oak and wool textile. The structure comprises four cabriole legs carved with lion mask details at the top, terminating in substantial claw and ball feet, supporting a low seat frame. The upholstery consists of a hand-sewn wool needlepoint textile in a geometric flame stitch pattern displaying shades of pink, green, blue, yellow, red, and black, finished with a decorative braided trim around the lower edge. The timber shows a medium brown tone with a warm patina, and the textile covering is non-original with replacement upholstery. Practical dimensions are 51 cm high, 55 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. The piece suits placement in a living room, study, or bedroom, functioning well as a footstool before a fireplace hearth or as a low occasional seat.

Victorian style furniture spans the mid-to-late nineteenth century, characterised by solid hardwoods, elaborate hand carvings, and revival motifs drawn from Gothic, Renaissance, and Rococo traditions.

Footstools from this era were typically constructed with solid wood frames such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, paired with hand-stitched needlepoint canvas, tapestry, or velvet upholstery.

Authentic period pieces display genuine hand-carved detailing with natural variations, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and accumulated age-related patination across the timber.

A carved Victorian stool functions as a textural accent piece positioned beside a fireplace hearth, placed at the foot of an armchair, or styled within an entryway.

Keep the stool away from direct sunlight and central heating sources, clean the timber using a dry microfibre cloth with natural wax, and lightly vacuum the textile upholstery with a brush attachment.
