This is a Victorian acid-etched, cut and engraved set of water jug and two goblets, attributed to Richardsons of Stourbridge, the decoration possibly by J. & J. Northwood, and made in the early part of the second half of the 19th century.

The items are in excellent condition for their age. They show some age related wear and tear commensurate with use.

The jug measures 9 cm (3.6 inches) by 7.5 cm (3 inches) across the extended pouring rim. The jug has been acid-etched to give a frosted appearance and has then been cut to reveal the clear glass beneath, panels of which have been engraved. Charles R. Hajdamach writes on how this was done in his wonderful book - "British Glass 1800-1914". The neck and body of the jug were polished through to reveal three sets of five graduated, vertically aligned diamond panels, the largest of these being engraved with flowers. The three engraved panels are of the English rose, the Scottish thistle and the Irish shamrock, a celebraton of the Union. The body sits on a small, conical star-cut foot. The intertwined (rope) handle was first applied to the top of the jug and finished off at the body. Hajdamach talks of this as being a distinctive feature of Richardsons' jugs. The jug is 27.5 cm (11 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

The goblets measure 9.3 cm (3.7 inches) in diameter at the rims. The bowls have been acid-etched to give a frosted appearance and have then been cut to reveal the clear glass beneath, panels of which have been engraved with the same flora as appear on the jug. The bowls sit on vertically facet cut hourglass stems. The stems end in conical, star-cut feet. The goblets are 17 cm (6.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

Together they weigh in at 1,600 g. (~ 3 lb. 9 oz.).
