Milk glass is an opaque or translucent, whitish or coloured glass that can be blown or pressed into a wide variety of shapes. While produced earlier, it reached peak popularity during the Victorian era in the mid-to-late 19th century for tableware, decorative items, and barware.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead glass or opaline glass, often featuring hand-blown bodies and ground glass stoppers. Labels were frequently incorporated using metal mounts, enamel, or ceramic inserts to identify the spirits within.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristics such as pontil marks on the base from hand-blowing, slight asymmetries, wear consistent with age, and period-appropriate typography or stopper styles. The glass often contains minute air bubbles and impurities typical of historical manufacturing methods.

Antique decanters can be displayed on a bar cart, sideboard, or open shelving to introduce historical texture and a refined silhouette. Pairing them with contemporary glassware creates a balanced interplay between old and new design elements.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive sponges that can damage the surface or historical labels. Glass stoppers should be stored loosely or removed during storage to prevent them from becoming stuck due to changes in temperature and humidity.
