Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur du jour is a type of light, delicate ladies writing desk introduced in 18th-century France and widely adapted during the Georgian period in Britain. It traditionally features a flat writing surface surmounted by a raised superstructure comprising shelves, small drawers, or cupboards.

During the George III period, cabinetmakers frequently utilised West Indian satinwood for veneering due to its lustrous grain, alongside rosewood, tulipwood, or mahogany crossbanding. Secondary woods such as pine and oak formed the interior drawer linings, fitted with cast brass hardware.

Authentic George III satinwood pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary timbers, and original brass hardware with natural oxidisation. The patina of genuine 18th-century satinwood exhibits a deep, golden tone rather than a bright yellow synthetic varnish finish.

A bonheur du jour functions as a compact dressing table, hallway accent desk, or dedicated correspondence space in a living room. Positioning it against a neutral wall allows the detailed wood figure and crossbanding to act as a focal anchor.

Maintain satinwood by keeping it out of direct sunlight, which can alter the colour of delicate veneers. Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply a thin coat of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber.
