A vinaigrette is a small pocket container used in the 18th and 19th centuries to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar, designed to mask unpleasant odours.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver, often featuring a layer of gold wash known as silver gilt on the interior to prevent the acidic vinegar from corroding the metal.

Authentic pieces bear clear hallmarks indicating the assay office, date letter, and makers mark, alongside intricately pierced and engraved internal grilles.

This piece can be displayed on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or styled on a desk alongside other small antiquities as a point of interest.

Silver gilt should be cleaned very gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical dips or excessive polishing that can wear away the delicate gold layer.
