A vinaigrette is a small, portable container dating primarily from the Georgian and Victorian eras, designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar. It was carried to mask unpleasant odours in public spaces and to counteract faintness.

These items were typically made from sterling silver, frequently featuring a gold-washed (gilt) interior to protect the silver from the corrosive effects of the vinegar. They are characterised by an intricately pierced and engraved internal grille.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarkssuch as the makers mark, standard mark, assay office mark, and date letteralongside the quality of the hand-engraving and the precise hinge and catch construction.

As a small decorative object, a vinaigrette can be displayed within a cabinet of curiosities, placed inside a glass-topped table display, or styled upon a desk alongside other historical silver pieces.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive microfibre cloth specifically designed for silver. Harsh chemical dips should be avoided, particularly on gilt surfaces, to preserve the original patina and details.
