A tyg is a traditional English drinking vessel characterised by having multiple handles, typically three or four, allowing it to be passed around a group for communal drinking.

Historically, tygs were made from earthenware, but by the Victorian and Edwardian eras, versions crafted from coopered wood such as oak with silver or silver-plated mounts became popular.

Authentication relies on examining the construction methods, such as coopered staves in the wood, the thickness and quality of the silver plating, and characteristic wear patterns or hallmarks where applicable.

Such items work well as decorative display objects on open shelving, mantelpieces, or within glass-fronted cabinets to add historical texture to a room.

Wood should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and silver-plated sections should be cleaned gently with a specialised non-abrasive silver cloth to avoid damaging the finish.
