Originating from the Lor tribes of Luristan in west Persia during the second half of the 19th century, this antique dining sofreh kilim comes from a private collection of tribal items. The piece consists of an all-wool and animal hair construction featuring a plain, undecorated central field woven from undyed natural tan animal hair wefts. This neutral expanse is flanked at both ends by colourful horizontal striped borders in red, blue, green, and dark brown, finished with a twisted selvedge binding and a braided fringe edge with loose tassels. The surface shows visible signs of age, including a small hole in the striped dark brown band and another small hole within the central field. Measuring 79 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 1 cm deep at its widest points, the flatweave is presented in a completely unrestored condition. Well suited for domestic settings today, the textile can serve as decorative wall art or find a home in various other ornamental displays within a rustic farmhouse interior. The design elements bring authentic nomadic character to hallways, living areas, or studies where traditional Persian tribal craftsmanship is appreciated. Its flat structure and manageable proportions allow for straightforward hanging or placement on suitable display surfaces. The clean, hand-washed condition preserves the historical integrity of the piece while maintaining the tactile qualities of the original weave.

A Sofreh is a traditional flatwoven textile crafted by nomadic tribes in Persia, historically used as a dining cloth or bread-baking mat.

Lor tribal kilims are hand-spun using natural sheep wool or camel hair, woven on portable ground looms with flatweave slit-weave or continuous warp techniques.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-spun yarn variations, natural vegetable dyes, wrapped selvedge cord bindings, and subtle geometric irregularities caused by portable tribal looms.

Tribal flatweaves function as accent floor coverings, decorative table overlays, or wall-mounted art to introduce texture and organic tones to contemporary spaces.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotary brush bar, spot-clean liquid spills immediately with a damp cloth, and consult a specialist textile conservator for deep cleaning.
