A vinaigrette is a small pocket-sized container used during the Georgian era to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar, which was inhaled to combat unpleasant odours and faintness.

These pieces are crafted from sterling silver, often featuring hand-engraved patterns on the exterior and an interior pierced gilt grille designed to hold the scented sponge securely.

Authentic pieces typically bear clear hallmarks including a makers mark, standard mark, duty mark, and date letter stamped by an official assay office.

Displaying such items on a mantelpiece or within a glass-fronted cabinet allows them to function as subtle, tactile objects of curiosity that add historical depth to a room.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage intricate engravings and gilding.
