Antique German Victorian "Sitzendorf" Porcelain "Owl" Oil Lamp

19th century
Description

A decorative and amusing Late 19th Century Antique German Victorian "Sitzendorf" Porcelain "Owl" Oil Lamp, the base with underglaze blue "crossed swords" Maker's Mark, suggesting that the piece was almost certainly manufactured in Saxony, by either Sitzendorf or one of their contemporaries during the latter part of the nineteenth century. The hook billed creature with typical upright stance gazing from what are probably replacement eyes, good clean brass burner, the wick winder buttons each marked DUPLEX, the whole ensemble topped off with a lovely early 20th Century Vintage amber glass shade decorated in the "Art Nouveau" manner  with sprays of lilies, replacement clear glass chimney as one would expect.

N.B. :- Our Antique Oil Lamps are offered for sale purely as decorative objects, are normally suppled without wicks, and no guarantees are offered as to their utility regarding their original purpose.

This nineteenth-century oil lamp from Germany is a porcelain, glass and brass object in the Victorian style. The white porcelain owl figure sits on a brown and yellowish base, displaying moulded plumage, a hook bill and amber glass eyes, with a brass burner, a clear glass chimney and an amber-topped pink glass shade. The burner includes brass wick winder buttons marked Duplex, while underglaze blue crossed swords appear on the base. The lamp stands 64.1 cm high, 24.1 cm wide and 24.1 cm deep. Placement suits a sideboard top in a living room, hallway or study as a decorative ornamental piece. Collectors display such nineteenth-century lighting items for their distinctive figural ceramics and decorative coloured glass components.

Manufactured during the late 19th century predominantly in Thuringia, Germany, these novelty oil lamps feature detailed porcelain bases cast in the likeness of owls, often fitted with glass eyes and paired with decorative etched or coloured glass shades.

These lamps typically incorporate glazed hard-paste porcelain bases, inset glass eyes, brass burner mechanisms, clear glass chimney flues, and hand-blown or etched glass shades.

Authentic pieces generally feature factory marks under the base, such as the crowned S mark, alongside crisp moulded feather details, glass eyes, and era-appropriate brass burner assemblies.

Place the lamp as a focal decorative accent on a dark wood sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to add historical texture and character to traditional or eclectic rooms.

Dust surfaces using a soft microfibre cloth, clean the glazed porcelain with a mild soap solution without submerging brass fittings, and handle glass chimneys with care to prevent thermal stress or breakage.
