This Persian tribal runner rug dates from 1880 and measures 336 cm high by 77 cm wide by 1 cm deep. Hand-knotted from wool and cotton, the textile displays a navy blue ground offset by terracotta red, cream, and yellow accents. The decoration comprises repeating geometric medallions, star medallions, latch-hooked motifs, and intricate border stripes running along the length. Visible details include fringe ends at the top and bottom borders, natural colour variations throughout the pile, and neatly bound selvedges along both vertical sides. Traditional in style, the piece fits well within an English Country House setting, functioning effectively as a floor covering in narrow hallways, corridors, or long entrance spaces. The construction utilises durable natural dyes and shiny wool fibres designed to withstand everyday foot traffic. The narrow proportions make the rug suitable for placement in transitional interior spaces where linear floor coverings are required to warm wooden or tiled flooring.

Karaja rugs originate from Northwest Persia, near the Heriz region, and are recognised for their geometric medallions arranged along a narrow central field. These pieces frequently feature alternating octagonal and latch-hooked motifs in rich natural dyes.

Traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool on a cotton or wool warp, Karaja rugs utilise symmetrical knots. The pile is dense wool coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes, creating durable floor coverings.

Authentic Karaja carpets are identified by their characteristic medallion sequence, typically featuring a central latch-hooked motif flanked by square or star-like medallions. The weave exhibits flexibility with a hand-clipped wool pile and natural colour variations known as abrash.

A long tribal runner introduces warmth and geometric structure to narrow spaces such as hallways, corridors, or alongside kitchen islands. Deep navy and terracotta tones complement light timber flooring, neutral walls, and contemporary schemes.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar to prevent fibre damage, and rotate the rug annually to distribute wear evenly. Clean spills immediately by blotting with an absorbent cloth and neutral water, avoiding harsh detergents.
