Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE EDWARDIAN ERA:
Neoclassical urn finials and husk drapery: early 20th-century revival of 18th-century Adam designs.
Crisply cast brass backplates and scrolling arms: typical quality of early electrical wall sconces.
Dark patina in the low relief casting: natural oxidisation built up over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This matched pair of Edwardian wall lights follows the Neoclassical Adam style, formed from cast brass with an antique gold finish. Each fitting incorporates a tapered backplate decorated with carved husk swags, surmounted by an urn finial and scrollwork elements. Two twin scroll arms extend outwards, each carrying a bulb holder above a detailed circular drip pan. The surface shows gentle patination and weathering across the metallic finish. Measuring 35 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, these fixtures operate well in a traditional hallway, flanking a mirror in a dining room, or illuminating a narrow wall space in a living room.

FAQs

Adam style wall lights are Neoclassical fixtures inspired by the 18th-century designs of architect Robert Adam. They feature symmetrical motifs such as urn finials, husk swags, rams heads, and tapered backplates.

These fixtures were predominantly crafted from heavy cast brass, bronze, or gilded metal alloys. The casting process allowed for precise relief work, including detailed floral and classical motifs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit considerable weight from solid cast metal, visible seam lines or hand-finished chasing on the reverse, and natural surface patination or oxidisation within the recessed detailed areas.

They are best placed in pairs to frame central focal points such as overmantel mirrors, artwork, or sideboards. Their classical proportions complement both traditional schemes and minimalist backdrops by offering textural contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth to prevent dust accumulation in detailed castings. Avoid aggressive chemical metal polishes, which can strip away historic aged patination and lacquered finishes.
