This pair of Japanese Meiji Period bronze vases originates from the nineteenth century. Each piece takes a baluster body shape with a flared rim, standing on a circular foot and featuring a dark brown patinated finish. The surface decoration includes high-relief birds perched amidst flowering branches against the patinated background, alongside artist signatures on the bases and a heavy bronze weight of 3.9 kg each. Measuring 46 cm high, 21 cm wide, and 21 cm deep, these items serve as decorative objects suited for display on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library. Due to their construction, they require a liner if used for holding water.

FAQs

Japanese Meiji Period metalwork, produced between 1868 and 1912, is characteristically recognized for its technical complexity, realistic high-relief carving, and cast decorative motifs depicting nature, flora, and fauna.

Craftsmen employed lost-wax casting techniques using patinated bronze alloys, incorporating mixed metals and high-relief cold carving to create detailed botanical and bird motifs.

Authentic pieces feature significant hand-finished weight, nuanced multi-toned patination, hand-chased relief details, and often artisan cast signatures or seal marks near the base.

Position the pair symmetrically on a large dining room sideboard, entry console table, or flanking a fireplace hearth to create visual balance and historical interest.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft lint-free cloth and avoid liquid cleaners or abrasive polishes, applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually to protect the patinated surface from oxidisation.
