This pair of 19th-century Japanese Meiji period artist pieces consists of two very large bronze vases in a dark brown colour. Each vase exhibits a slender neck with a flared rim and a rounded base, decorated with chased patterns, high-relief birds, and coiled dragons. The bronze surfaces show minor historic knocks, marks, and repairs, along with a small chip to the mouth of one vase, indicating typical antique condition and age. The construction includes turned mouldings around the neck and base, as well as distinct circular feet supporting the rounded bodies. These decorative items measure 46 cm in height and 18 cm in diameter, with each piece weighing 2.9 kg. Positioned in a gentleman's library, the pair sits suitably atop a large sideboard or heavy timber desk. Because the bronze construction is probably not watertight, the vessels require a protective liner if used to display fresh botanical arrangements. They integrate smoothly into traditional study spaces, reception rooms, or formal hallways where collectors display historic Asian metalwork. The dark brown finish coordinates effectively with mahogany furniture, leather upholstery, and panelled walls.

Produced during the Meiji era between 1868 and 1912, these bronze vessels represent a period of refined artistic metalwork in Japan, featuring complex cast and chased decoration depicting flora, fauna, and mythological creatures.

Craftsmen utilised lost-wax casting methods, followed by hand-chasing and engraving to refine high-relief details, before applying patination using chemical treatments to achieve dark brown tones.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit substantial weight, crisp high-relief moulding, hand-finished chasing, natural wear on the base rim, and occasionally a maker mark cast into the base.

Position them symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or within deep wall alcoves to create visual balance and introduce rich texture to modern or traditional schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patination from oxidisation, avoiding chemical solvents.
