This late Victorian brass coal helmet originates from 1890 in the English Country House style. The fireplace accessory is made from polished brass with a gold colour and features a raised pedestal base, riveted seams around the body, and an arched swing handle. Elaborate repoussé relief metalwork decorates the front slope, while the hinged lid adds functional hardware to the form. It stands 56 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. Positioned on a fireplace hearth, this piece serves as a decorative coal scuttle beside an active or display fireplace. The polished metallic finish reflects room light while providing traditional storage for fuel.

A coal helmet, or coal scuttle, is a specialised vessel designed during the nineteenth century to store and pour coal into domestic hearths.

Traditional scuttles were typically crafted from solid brass, copper, or sheet iron, often featuring repousse metalwork, cast handles, and riveted seams to withstand daily heat and weight.

Authentic period pieces often display signs of internal wear from historic use, hand-riveted joints, heavy-gauge metal, and era-appropriate embossed decoration rather than uniform modern machine stamping.

An antique coal scuttle functions effectively beside a contemporary wood-burning stove, utilised as a planter for indoor foliage, or positioned on a hearth to hold kindling.

Brass items should be dusted with a soft cloth and treated with a suitable metal polish to remove tarnish, avoiding harsh chemical cleansers that can strip decorative patination.
