This 19th century Victorian brass coal scuttle takes a traditional helmet shape and features warm brass colouring with an overall beaten finish. The piece rests upon a circular pedestal base with tiered mouldings. An overhead loop handle attaches to the sides, accompanied by a folding lid handle fitted with a turned wooden grip, while a vertical shovel handle fitted with a turned wooden finial projects from the top surface. The main body displays extensive hand-hammered texture, and the hinged lid along with the forward-projecting scoop incorporate an impressed abstract pattern of leaves and pods. Brass hardware joins the various components together. Measuring 56 cm high by 56 cm wide by 31 cm deep, this fireplace accessory suits placement directly upon a living room hearth to store fuel for an open fire while adding traditional English Country House character to the room.

A coal scuttle is a vessel designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to store and transport coal from outdoor stores directly to indoor open hearths and stoves.

19th-century scuttles were primarily constructed from sheet brass, copper, or iron, often featuring turned wooden or porcelain handles and rivets for reinforced durability.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-hammering, hand-riveted construction seams, original patination, and minor wear around the pedestal base and handle joints.

In modern living spaces, these vessels serve effectively as fireside decorative accents, kindling holders, or planter containers placed near open hearths or log burners.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish lightly using a specialized metal polish to remove oxidisation while preserving the underlying historic patina.
