Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This traditional French Empire style bouillotte desk lamp, dating from 1910, is constructed from bronze and brass with a dark green painted tole shade. The piece stands on a dished circular tray base with stepped mouldings and supports three candle-socket arms. A central upright rod holds the adjustable shade in place via a screw key mechanism. The dark green shade displays hand-painted gold leaf foliate decoration around the lower rim and shows minor surface scratches. Measuring 61 cm high, 15 cm wide and 33 cm deep, the lamp has been fully rewired for modern use. Placed upon an office desk or a library table in a gentleman's study, it provides focused downward illumination while adding a classic antique aesthetic to the room.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century France, a bouillotte lamp was designed specifically for the popular card game of the same name, featuring a dish-shaped base to hold game tokens and an adjustable shade to block light glare.

Bouillotte lamps are traditionally constructed from cast brass or bronze for the stem, arms, and tray, combined with a painted tin or iron shade known as toleware.

Key identifying features include a heavy dished base designed as a catch-all tray, multiple candle-style arms, and a shade mounted on a central key-locking screw mechanism that slides vertically.

Position the lamp on a dark wood writing desk, a hallway console table, or alongside leather-bound books on a sideboard to add neoclassical structure and ambient task lighting.

Dust the painted shade gently with a microfibre cloth and wipe the bronze or brass components using a clean, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that could strip historic patination or hand-painted details.
