This Persian Bijar kilim rug dates from the period of 1890 and displays a French-influenced floral design with a deep red ground field, a small central diamond medallion, and multicoloured floral motifs in blue, green, and cream. The flatweave wool textile incorporates a geometric framing and a detailed slit-weave border in contrasting tones of blue, red, and yellow, finished with very slight even wear across the surface. Measuring 256 cm high by 161 cm wide and 1 cm deep, this floor covering is suitable for light domestic foot traffic in an English country house interior, such as a study, drawing room, or bedroom. Hand washed and prepared for display, the rug functions well on wooden flooring or carpets to introduce traditional pattern and warmth to a residential space. The sturdy wool construction ensures practical utility alongside decorative appeal for daily use in a living area or hallway. The balanced composition and traditional Persian craftsmanship provide an authentic period accent for interior schemes seeking historical textiles.

Bijar kilims originate from the Kurdish town of Bijar in northwestern Persia. Renowned for their exceptional weave density and structural integrity, these textiles traditionally feature bold geometric medallions, floral motifs, and rich colour palettes produced using local vegetable dyes.

Traditional Bijar kilims are flatwoven using hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft. Craftspeople utilise a slit-weave technique where coloured weft threads are woven across sections to form crisp geometric patterns, resulting in a durable, pileless rug.

Authentic 19th-century kilims display subtle natural colour variations known as abrash, caused by hand-dyed wool batches. They exhibit hand-spun yarns, minor structural irregularities, and a soft, supple handle that synthetic modern reproductions cannot replicate.

A Persian kilim works well layered over neutral hardwood floors, stone tiles, or natural fibre carpets. Its vibrant graphic pattern grounds contemporary minimalist furniture, dark timber accents, or traditional brass fittings.

Vacuum the rug regularly using suction only, avoiding beater bars that can snag flatweave fibres. Use a quality rug underlay to prevent sliding and wear, rotate the rug annually to balance sun exposure, and employ professional specialist rug cleaners for deep stain removal.
