Description

This antique solid sterling silver waiter or waiter, dating from the reign on George II, was, at some point, the presentation trophy in a Christie's-sponsored steeplechase.

It is boxed along with a letter, sadly undated, giving the details of the waiter. Loathe as I am to find any fault with such an auspicious company as Christie's, the letter states the waiter to date from 1737 when, in fact, the date is 1739. The maker's mark for Robert Abercromby, alongside the hallmark of London 1739, is clear and crisp. Robert Abercromby was a specialist saver maker who changed the style of his maker's mark to that stamped on this salver in 1739.

The waiter features shell and scroll shaped edges, with a circular foliate engraving to centre all raised on 3 scroll legs. The box is dark blue and fairly basic in design, although the clasps close tightly.

The George II period, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by a transition from the restrained lines of the Queen Anne era to the more exuberant rococo influences, featuring heavy cast elements, rich ornamentation, and symmetrical forms.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver, adhering to the strict British assay standards, and constructed using techniques such as raising from a single flat sheet, hand-chasing, and soldering cast feet and rims.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks indicating the makers mark, town mark, standard mark (such as the lion passant for sterling), and date letter, alongside period-correct weight, wear patterns, and hand-engraved details.

An antique silver salver can be styled as a reflective centrepiece on a sideboard or coffee table, contrasting effectively against dark wood surfaces or minimalist stone finishes to introduce a layer of historic texture.

Preservation requires storing silver in tarnish-preventing cloths or controlled environments, minimising abrasive polishes, and using specialized non-abrasive silver foams or cloths only when cleaning is strictly necessary to protect the patina.
