London 1894 Solid Silver Match Safe of Large Size.

19th century
Description

London 1894 Victorian English hallmarked solid silver matchsafe of large size, and heavy weight.

Maker is Henry Titterton Brockwell trading as Brockwell & Son.

Vesta cases and match safes are airtight cases made to contain short friction matches and keep them safe and dry. They were made in many materials, and some in precious metals like this one, usually with gilt linings, to protect against corrosion from the match heads. They were widely made and used from 1890-1920. Many had a loop attached, like this one, to attach to an Albert chain. Now, they are very collectable and interesting small antique silver items.

Size-2 3/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide, and weighing 50 grams.

Hallmarks are rubbed, and there are some age commensurate dints and minor line marks to safe, showing it was well used and enjoyed. The solid fold down clasp and side piano hinge are very tight, secure and even.

Match safes were meant to hold matches, but can now also be used for pills, two photos and the like.

A nice well made, heavy and large example.

Declaration

Serpentine Antiques has dated this Victorian Silver Vesta Case to the 1890s.

This large Victorian sterling silver match safe originates from London 1894, produced by Henry Titterton Brockwell trading as Brockwell & Son. The heavy solid silver vesta case has a polished silver finish with a rounded rectangular body, a side piano hinge, a solid fold down clasp, and an attached suspension ring at the top edge. The exterior displays rubbed hallmarks along with age commensurate dints and minor line marks from previous handling. The piece measures 2 3/8 inches long by 2 1/8 inches wide, weighing 50 grams. Today, this antique item sits neatly on an office desk or library table to store small modern items such as pills or miniature photographs. It functions as a tactile desktop accessory or a pocket collectable that brings period character to a workspace.

A vesta case, also known as a match safe, is a small portable container designed during the nineteenth century to hold friction matches safely in a pocket or attached to a watch chain.

They were crafted from hallmarked sterling silver sheets formed into rectangular or oval shapes, fitted with a spring-loaded hinged lid and an integrated textured striker strip along the base or side.

Authentic British silver items carry full official hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling silver, the leopards head for the London assay office, the specific date letter for 1894, and an registered makers mark.

Small silver items are ideal for desk styling within a gentlemans library aesthetic, positioned inside a glass tabletop display box, or layered on a tray alongside small decorative antiques.

Clean the piece using a soft microfiber cloth and a specialised gentle silver polish to remove oxidisation without stripping surface detail or obscuring the hallmarks.
