An Edwardian pair of George V novelty knife rests originates from 1913, manufactured in sterling silver combined with mother of pearl. Each piece takes the form of a stylised winged orb standing upon a shaped filled silver base, accompanied by an original fitted case with a navy velvet-lined interior, a cream silk-lined lid, and a small metal clasp on the front edge. The outstretched wings display carved linear feather details, while the silver surfaces exhibit light surface wear consistent with age and gentle use, and the lined case shows fraying along the inner fabric trim. The items measure 4 cm high and 7.5 cm wide. Such dining accessories sit upon a sideboard top within an English country house setting, serving as decorative table items for resting cutlery during formal dining or gatherings. Their unusual form and material combination provide practical utility alongside period charm for collectors of early twentieth-century silver.

Knife rests were designed to elevate used cutlery off the tablecloth to prevent staining during multi-course meals, serving as both functional and decorative dining accessories in Victorian and Edwardian households.

Edwardian knife rests were crafted using materials such as sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), mother-of-pearl, faceted glass, and carved bone, often constructed with weighted metal bases for stability.

Authentic British sterling silver items from 1913 feature clear assay office hallmarks, including the lion passant standard mark, an assay town mark, a specific date letter, and a registered makers mark stamped into the silver base.

These historical accessories can be placed on a dining room sideboard, styled as functional elements on a formal dinner table, or arranged inside a glazed display cabinet alongside period silverware.

Clean the silver surfaces gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, avoiding submersion in water or harsh chemicals that could loosen or damage the natural mother-of-pearl elements.
