This pair of Victorian Rococo Revival candlesticks originates from 1870 and is made from electroplated nickel silver with a bright silver finish. The pieces display elaborate relief decoration including scrolling acanthus foliage, raised floral sprays, and shell-like ornament across the wide circular bases, shaped baluster stems, and removable upper sconces. The visual details include undulating moulded borders, asymmetrical handle-like scroll motifs, and recessed candle sockets set within floral rims. Each candlestick stands 12.5 cm high with a base width of 10.5 cm. These items are suitable for display on a mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard in a traditional or French Chateau interior. They function practically for holding taper candles while adding a decorative period accent to a living room, dining room, or hallway.

FAQs

Rococo Revival emerged in the mid-nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from eighteenth-century French Louis XV designs. It features prominent organic forms, asymmetrical curves, scrolling acanthus leaves, and detailed shell motifs executed across cast and electroplated metalwork.

Victorian candlesticks were frequently produced using electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), Sheffield plate, or solid brass and sterling silver. The process allowed intricate cast relief details to be achieved over sturdy base metals before receiving a silver layer.

Authentic pieces often feature stamped makers marks, trade emblems, or electroplate hallmarks near the base or rim. Additional indicators include period-appropriate construction weight, natural wear patterns showing base metal on high points, and historic casting seams.

Ornate silver candlesticks function well as contrast accents on minimal dining tables, stone mantelpieces, or contemporary sideboards. Pairing heavily detailed historical metalwork with modern geometric ceramics or clean line furnishings balances decorative texture.

Clean silver-plated items using a non-abrasive silver polish applied with a soft microfibre cloth to prevent wearing through the plating. Avoid submerging weighted bases in water, and remove melted candle wax using warm water rather than sharp implements.
