A small George V vanity or ointment jar dates from 1926 in the Art Deco style. The clear glass base features slice cut panels to the sides, a pull-off silver collar mount, and a rounded lid decorated with cobalt blue engine-turned guilloche enamel. The silver lid shows clear hallmarks and is richly gilded inside. The jar has a tiny area of loss to the enamel edge alongside age-related wear to the metal mount, while the glass body remains free of cracks or chips. Measuring 3 cm high by 3.4 cm wide, the piece serves as a dressing table item on a bathroom counter or functions as a pill box in the home.

Vanity jars were essential accessories for nineteenth and early twentieth-century dressing tables, used to hold face powders, rouges, and ointments. During the Edwardian and Art Deco eras, silversmiths frequently embellished the silver lids of these cut-glass containers with engine-turned guilloche enamel.

These items typically feature a heavy crystal or cut glass base paired with a sterling silver or silver-gilt mount. The upper surface of the lid often incorporates vitreous enamel applied over patterned metal engraving.

Authentic pieces display British hallmark stamps on the silver mount, indicating the purity, assay office, and year of manufacture. The enamel should show precise engine-turned geometric patterns beneath a smooth, translucent glass enamel glaze.

Place small enamel vanity pots on a marble bathroom counter, a bedroom vanity tray, or an entry table to serve as functional trinket holders for small jewellery items. Their reflective glass and colourful enamel provide subtle texture and historical contrast in contemporary settings.

Wipe the enamel surface gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes or immersion in hot water, which can damage the glaze. Silver mounts can be brightened using a dedicated silver polishing cloth, taking care not to rub the polish onto the surrounding enamel.
