The design of the sconces, particularly the ornate detailing and the oval shape of the mirrors, suggests influence from the Louis XVI style, which was popular in the 19th century. The style is characterised by elegance, symmetry, and classical motifs.

FAQs

Louis XVI style wall sconces typically feature neoclassically inspired ornamentation, symmetry, scrolling foliate metalwork, and often incorporate mirrored backplates to amplify light.

These fixtures are commonly constructed from cast brass or bronze finished with gilding, fitted with bevelled or flat mirror glass plates and branching candle arms.

Authentic period sconces often show evidence of hand-casting, hand-chased metalwork, age-appropriate surface oxidisation, and substantial physical weight from solid cast brass or bronze.

Position sconces symmetrically on narrow wall sections, flanking an overmantel mirror, or beside hallway entryways to provide reflected ambient light and classical structure.

Dust metal surface details regularly using a dry microfibre brush, avoiding chemical solvents or abrasive polishes that could strip the delicate gilded layer or damage mirror backing.
