During the Taisho era and early Art Deco period, Japanese silversmiths produced fine silver vanity items tailored for European and American export markets, combining Western functional forms with traditional Japanese motifs.

These compacts were predominantly crafted from high-purity sterling silver, frequently featuring mixed-metal inlays such as shakudo, shibuichi, or gilding, alongside fitted interior glass mirrors.

Authentic pieces generally display silver hallmark stamps such as STERLING or 950, alongside hand-engraved artistic details, signature characters, or maker marks characteristic of Japanese export silver.

An antique silver compact can be displayed open or closed on a vanity tray, arranged within a glass display case, or styled atop a bedroom dresser.

Wipe the exterior surface gently using a soft cotton cloth, avoiding harsh liquid polishes on mixed-metal inlay or enamel details, and store in a low-humidity environment to prevent tarnish.
