Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

French Rococo style wall lights, also known as appliques, emerged in the 18th century during the reign of Louis XV. They are recognised by asymmetrical scrolling lines, organic foliate motifs, acanthus leaves, and twin candle arms designed to cast decorative reflections against interior walls.

Traditional French wall sconces were typically sand-cast or lost-wax cast in solid brass or bronze. The cast metal was then hand-chased to refine intricate surface details and finished with fire-gilding (ormolu) or electroplated gold leaf lacquer to protect the surface from oxidisation.

Authentic period pieces display cast metal construction with visible hand-tooling or chasing marks on the reverse side. They exhibit significant visual weight, natural oxidisation in deep recesses, and thread patterns consistent with historic manufacturing techniques rather than modern metric threads.

Pairing gilded brass sconces alongside modern artwork, flanking a contemporary bathroom mirror, or positioning them within plain plastered alcoves creates a striking dialogue between classic period detail and clean modern minimalism.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush to clean detailed crevices. Avoid chemical brass polishes, liquid cleaners, or abrasive materials, as these can strip original gilding and historic lacquered finishes.
