This George III sterling silver snuff box originates from London in 1819, created in the Georgian style with a silver gilt finish in a warm gold tone. The rectangular piece exhibits a hinged lid featuring a high-relief repoussé chasing of three figures in a tavern scene, surrounded by a detailed foliate border and ornate scrollwork. Cast acanthus leaves decorate all four sides of the body, complementing the engine-turned pattern on the base and the secure thirteen-part hinge mechanism. The crisp gilding shows minimal wear on the high points, and the interior retains its original gold coating alongside official hallmarks. Measuring 2 cm high, 5 cm wide and 8 cm deep, the compact box fits neatly into a modern study or library setting. Placed on an office desk, mantelpiece or display table, it serves as a sophisticated desktop accessory for holding small items or functioning as a decorative desk object.

A Georgian silver gilt snuff box is a small pocket-sized container crafted from sterling silver coated with gold leaf or gilding, created during the reign of Kings George I through George IV. These boxes were designed to hold ground tobacco leaf and often featured relief chasing or engraving.

During the early 19th century, silversmiths utilised sterling silver formed by hand, embellished with repousse and chasing techniques to produce raised relief scenes. Fire-gilding, involving a mercury-gold amalgam heated to fuse gold onto silver, was the traditional method used to achieve the gilt surface.

Authentic pieces carry British hallmarks stamped by an assay office, such as the leopards head for London, alongside date letters and sovereign duty marks. Additionally, genuine silver gilt shows characteristic wear pattern signs where gold softens slightly to reveal underlying sterling silver on high points.

These decorative objects are frequently placed inside display cabinets, on desk trays, or stacked atop books on bookshelves to add metallic texture and historical detail. Their small scale makes them suitable for curated tabletop accessory displays.

Silver gilt surfaces should be dusted using a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent abrasion. Chemical polish liquids and abrasive compounds should be avoided entirely, as they can permanently wear away the thin gold layer.
